Responding to the critical need to expand the number of primary care physicians who are trained and retained in South Georgia, the South Georgia Medical Education and Research Consortium was created. The consortium includes Colquitt Regional Medical Center (CRMC), John D Archbold Memorial Hospital (JDAMH), Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital (PPMH), South Georgia Medical Center (SGMC), and Tift Regional Medical Center (TRMC) (the Consortium) in partnership with Southwest Georgia Area Health Education Center (SOWEGA-AHEC), Community Health Centers, and Georgia’s Health Sciences University Medical College of Georgia (GHSU-MCG) is engaged in a planning process to develop and/or expand GME programs in the region. This unique effort is at the forefront nationally in planning for GME expansion through a consortium of independent hospitals, public agencies and medical schools. Hospitals partners and GHSU-MCG have invested seed funding for GME expansion planning. The Consortium is an independent 501©3 not-for-profit corporation.
The purpose of the Consortium shall be to improve access to quality healthcare, and to support regional economic vitality, through training and retaining physicians, especially in primary care specialties such as family medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, internal medicine, general surgery, and emergency medicine, in South Georgia. It is the goal of the Consortium to stimulate interdisciplinary training opportunities throughout the region for a wide range of health professionals.
